Past, Present, Future: Picture Story Speaking

A no-prep ESL speaking lesson for a 10-year-old student. Each image has three panels: Past, Present, and Future.

Teacher flow: describe freely, answer the 10 question cards, practise prepositions, then do the simple tenses test.

Grammar Focus

Past

Use past verbs for finished actions. Example: The teacher taught the class.

Present

Use the base verb, or add -s for he/she/it. Example: The boys play games.

Future

Use will + verb. Example: They will clean up.

Present Continuous

Use am/is/are + verb-ing. Example: The students are writing.

8-Point Simple Tenses Test

Only use past tense, present tense, future tense, and present continuous.

Final Speaking Challenge

Choose one picture story. Tell the story in 6 sentences: 2 past + 2 present + 2 future.

Past: The family arrived at the supermarket. They looked at the shopping list. Present: They are choosing fruit and vegetables. Future: They will pay and go home.
